BNB Chain Expands Its Network Without a New Token
BNB Chain is developing an additional Layer 1 (L1) blockchain while maintaining BNB as the core token across its ecosystem. Rather than introducing a separate cryptocurrency for the new network, the plan extends BNB’s existing role in transaction fees, staking, and governance.
The proposed blockchain will operate alongside BNB Smart Chain (BSC), giving the ecosystem another network without replacing its existing infrastructure. A native bridge is planned to connect the two chains, allowing them to operate as interconnected parts of the broader BNB Chain ecosystem.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), Binance’s co-founder, summed up the approach in a short message: “Multiple chains, one coins.” The statement highlights the central idea behind the expansion: supporting multiple blockchain networks while retaining a shared token.
BNB Will Remain Central to Network Operations
The decision not to issue a separate token is a key part of the proposed design. BNB will continue to serve as the asset used to pay gas fees, participate in staking, and support governance on the new network.
Gas fees are the transaction costs users pay to interact with a blockchain. Staking involves committing tokens within a network’s validator or staking system, while governance provides a mechanism for making decisions about network parameters and operations.
BNB Chain’s official New L1 documentation describes the project as a high-performance, Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible Layer 1 designed for latency-sensitive on-chain activity. The documentation also outlines features intended to improve transaction responsiveness and network functionality.
Keeping BNB as the common asset means the expansion is not being framed around launching another token. Instead, the focus is on extending the existing token’s utility across additional infrastructure.
How the New Layer 1 Will Connect With BSC
The new blockchain is intended to complement BNB Smart Chain rather than replace it. BSC will continue operating while the additional network is developed for workloads that benefit from a different technical architecture.
The planned native bridge will connect the new L1 with BSC. According to the official network information documentation, the bridge is still in development, and public network endpoints have not yet been made available.
This distinction matters because the proposal remains under active development. The existence of technical documentation does not mean the new blockchain is already available for general use, and the bridge should not be treated as operational before its deployment is confirmed.
The approach could eventually give developers another environment within the BNB Chain ecosystem while preserving BNB’s role across the network family. However, its practical impact will depend on the implementation, interoperability arrangements, and availability of the new chain.
Performance and Development Status
BNB Chain’s documentation describes the new L1 as a network built for applications that require fast transaction processing. Its listed features include transaction pre-confirmation, sub-second finality, native account abstraction, and reserved transaction capacity through a system called Multi-Lane.
The network’s technical documentation specifies a target block interval of 200 milliseconds and sub-second finality using cross-block BLS votes. These are technical parameters documented for the development network, not guarantees of performance under future public-network conditions.
The network is currently at the devnet stage. BNB Chain’s documentation warns that the development environment is unstable and may undergo breaking changes. A public testnet or mainnet endpoint is not yet listed in its network information page.
Consequently, the proposed architecture and its performance goals should be distinguished from capabilities demonstrated in a mature public network. Further development and testing will be necessary before users can assess the chain’s real-world performance.
What the Plan Means for the BNB Ecosystem
The new L1 represents an expansion of BNB Chain’s infrastructure while keeping its token model centered on BNB. Instead of requiring users and developers to adopt a newly issued token for the additional network, the plan preserves the same asset for gas fees, staking, and governance.
For developers, a second network could provide another environment for applications that need different performance characteristics. For users, the planned bridge could eventually offer a connection between BSC and the new chain, although its availability depends on development progress.
The broader significance lies in how BNB Chain intends to scale: multiple networks connected within one ecosystem, with BNB retaining its central role. Whether that model delivers meaningful benefits will depend on the new chain’s deployment, bridge functionality, performance, and adoption.
For now, the project remains in development. The key milestones to watch are the arrival of a public testnet, the completion of the native bridge, and confirmation of when the network becomes available for broader use.
